What to See in Venice in One Day (1 Day Venice Itinerary)

Your 1-day adventure begins early, when Venice feels quiet, magical, and yours to explore.

A Morning in Venice

7:30-8:00 AM – Start your 1 day Venice itinerary with sunrise at Piazza San Marco.

Firstly, start your day early by catching the sunrise at Piazza San Marco. The Basilica di San Marco and the Campanile di San Marco are particularly impressive in the early hours when there are fewer crowds.

9:00 AM – Breakfast with a View

Afterward, find a local café for a traditional Venetian breakfast. You can sip a cappuccino and indulge in a fresh pastry while overlooking the Grand Canal. This simple yet delightful experience sets the tone for a day filled with culinary delights.

10:00 AM – Explore the Rialto Market and Bridge

Next, make your way to the Rialto Market and the Rialto Bridge. One of Venice’s iconic landmarks which offers a stunning view of the Grand Canal and a perfect photo opportunity. One of my favorite Venetian Mask stores is also near here and worth stopping into, La Bottega dei Mascareri.

11:00 AM – Walking around the Dorsoduro District

From here you can take the vaporettos (The water ferries) to the Ponte dell’Accademia stop and explore the Dorsoduro district. You can visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection to marvel at modern art or you can explore the labyrinthine streets for charming boutiques and cafes. This district offers a quieter side of Venice, away from the bustling tourist areas.

Enjoy Lunch Along the Canal

11:30 PM – Savor a Quick and Authentic Venetian Lunch in Dorsoduro District

For lunch, I recommend a quick meal at a local bacaro, which is a small wine bar that serves snacks and small plates. My favorite is Osteria Al Squero, situated along the canal. There, you can enjoy a unique view of traditional gondolas being built in the boatyard across the way. The specialty of the house is cicchetti, which are small tapas-style dishes that are a must-try when in Venice. This culinary experience is not only delicious but also a time-efficient way to try a traditional Venetian dish. It’s quirky, iconic, and absolutely worth a stop in your Venice itinerary for 1 day.

1:00 St. Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace

After lunch, you should take the opportunity to visit St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. They’re both architecturally stunning and full of history. I recommend booking a guided tour ahead of time to learn about the Basilica and the Venetian Republic.

3:00 PM – Libreria Acqua Alta

Following your tour of St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, you can head to the famous Libreria Acqua Alta. This bookstore is famous for its unique setting, surrounded by canals and gondolas. You can browse books and see the cats that live there.

Sunset in Venice

The best way to end your 1 day Venice itinerary? From the water.

5:00 PM – Gondola Ride, Water Taxi Adventure, or Rowing Lesson

One of the best views of Venice is from the canal at sunset. You can take a classic gondola ride, or go for an adventure in a water taxi. Or, if you’re feeling energetic, you can take a rowing lesson from Row Venice, a nonprofit. All three options give you a unique perspective of the city from its waterways.

8:00 PM – Dinner at a Local Trattoria

Conclude your day with a delightful dinner at a local trattoria. Indulge in Venetian specialties, and perhaps, cap off your meal with a glass of local prosecco. Reflect on the day’s adventures and savor the unique charm that makes Venice an unforgettable destination.
